US Sen. Scott Brown and former Obama administration official Elizabeth Warren have spent months criss-crossing the state on their Senate campaigns, reaching out to voters and battling one another through press releases.

On Sunday, the Wrentham Republican and the Cambridge Democrat will attempt something widely viewed by most elected officials as harder than politicking – comedy – as both are expected to speak at the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast, an annual roast hosted by state Sen. Jack Hart (D-South Boston) at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

“The main event is Elizabeth Warren versus Scott Brown,” said state Rep. Marty Walsh (D-Dorchester). “There’s a lot of pressure on both of them.”

Warren is seeking to unseat Brown in the state’s highest-profile race this year. And as Sen. Hart once put it: The bigger you are, the bigger the target on your back at the breakfast.

A local tradition, the breakfast will start at 10 a.m. and air on New England Cable News (NECN). The South Boston parade, which starts at the Broadway MBTA Station, goes down West Broadway, and finishes up near the Andrew Square station, will follow the breakfast at around 12:30 p.m.

NECN’s Jim Braude will anchor coverage of the breakfast, with political reporter Alison King providing reports from the breakfast floor. Among the expected guests: Mayor Thomas Menino, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray, state Senate President Therese Murray, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, and Joseph Kennedy III, a Democrat who is running for US Rep. Barney Frank’s seat.

Walsh predicted that Kennedy, the son of former Congressman Joseph Kennedy II, will likely come in for some jabbing. Gov. Deval Patrick, who will be returning on Sunday from a vacation in the US Virgin Islands and is skipping the breakfast, will likely to be a target of quips, as will former Gov. Mitt Romney, who is struggling to lock up the Republican nomination for president.

Lt. Gov. Murray’s Nov. 2 car crash could also probably prove to be fodder among the elected officials who will be taking the microphone.

The Wolfe Tones, an Irish band, will provide on-scene music at the breakfast. Comcast SportsNet plans to re-air the breakfast on Sat., March 24 at 11 a.m. and also make the broadcast available on its OnDemand section.
