With one week until the Sept. 8 primary election, several Dorchester and Mattapan incumbents are seeking to stave off challenges to their seats while others are running unopposed, among them state Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry in the First Suffolk District and state representatives Russell Holmes in the 6th Suffolk and Dan Hunt in the 13th Suffolk.

The most contested race on the ballot is the usually sleepy run for Suffolk County Register of Deeds.

Two state representatives have opposition: Daniel Cullinane has two challengers as he seeks his second full term after holding the 12th Suffolk seat since 2013: Jovan Lacet, a Mattapan lawyer, and Carlotta Williams of Hyde Park who is making another run for the seat after losing to Cullinane in 2014.

In the 5th Suffolk District, Rep. Evandro Carvalho’s sole Democratic challenger is Melinda Stewart of Dorchester, a nearly non-existent presence throughout the campaign so far, with no campaign committee or funds raised as reported by the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

Carvalho will face perennial candidate Althea Garrison, who is running as a Republican, in the November election.

Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins, who has held his post since his appointment by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2103, is facing newcomer Alexander Rhalimi.

Tompkins has received the endorsements of Mayor Martin Walsh and Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo, as well as several Boston city councillors and local representatives. Rhalimi, of Revere, is promoting his years of management experience, criminal justice certifications, and active involvement on both a community and law enforcement front.

The largest field in this primary is chasing the Suffolk County Register of Deeds position. The register and a small army of clerks oversee property transactions in Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop.

Francis “Mickey” Roache of Dorchester resigned as register last December after 13 years in office, leaving the six-year, $124,000 per year position open for the September ballot.

Eyeing the Register seat are, in ballot order: Pope’s Hill resident and West Roxbury realtor Douglas Bennett; Lower Mills resident and attorney Stephanie Everett, Roslindale paralegal Katherine Forde; Michael Mackan; former city councillor at-large Stephen Murphy; Paul Nutting Jr., a Savin Hill civic leader with years of land management experience; and South End attorney Jeffrey Michael Ross.
