The 11th annual Dorchester Chili Cook-Off will bring the heat an otherwise cool March weekend with some fierce, but friendly competition at the IBEW Hall on Freeport Street. Distinguished “foodie” judges, who shall be kept a secret until the day of the event, will award prizes in four categories this year: Best of Show, Best Non-Beef, Most Creative Dish and Team Spirit, which is awarded for the best costumes, decorations and enthusiasm.
Last year, the Chili Cook-Off raised $17,000 for the Dorchester Day Parade. According to event coordinator Pat O’Neill, organizers hope to raise just as much, if not more, on Sunday.
The cook-off will run from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $20 per person, $30 for families up to 4, and for each additional child, $5. The tickets will be available at the door.
The judges and committee members are calling all neighbors, friends and family to vote for one of the best titles of the day, including the most coveted “People’s Choice” prize. The winner of this special category will be gifted the golden bean pot and bragging rights. Attendees will be able to vote with their entry ticket.
Entries submitted this year include local restaurants, civic associations and community organizations. Landmark Restaurant, DJ’s Market, and Harp and Bard are among the 26 local participants. Neponset Car Wash, Standish Village and Dorchester YMCA are among the top sponsors of the event.
A DJ and a steel band will provide music and fun. Wine toss for adults, games and crafts for the kids, raffles, silent auction and a green screen will all be a part of the festivities this year.
The IBEW Local 103 hall is located at 256 Freeport St.
