Two women from Dorchester and Mattapan were honored at the State House last month with Hispanic Heritage Month Excellence on the Hill awards.
Yauri Ruiz, of Mattapan, was hailed by state Rep. Brandy Fluker-Oakley for being a passionate advocate for the restoration of the state’s Ryan Playground renovation on River Street. She created awareness that resulted in more input from neighbors and a much better project.
“Yauri’s work highlights the impact of grassroots activism, showing how residents can play an important role in shaping their neighborhoods,” wrote Fluker-Oakley.
Also celebrated was Dorchester resident Estella Rosario, owner of Dahlia’s Garden Floral Shop in Uphams Corner. State Rep. Chris Worrell spotlighted Rosario for her work as a business leader in the Dudley Street area, as well as for her advocacy for community gardens at Nightingale Community Garden and the Shirley Eustis House Garden, among others.
Rosario often uses her own gardens to supply her store with certain flowers for her arrangements.
The Excellence on the Hill Awards seek to showcase men and women across the state who are contributing positively to their community – often without fanfare or acclaim.
