City Councillor At-Large Michael Flaherty holds a City Hall presser with fellow City Councillor At-Large Sam Yoon on a top Menino aide taking an unpaid leave of absence over the controversial deletion of work emails.
MAYOR THOMAS MENINO:
11:00 AM "Blue in Green" Jobs Rally
Mattapan Library, 1350 Blue Hill Ave.
Mayor Menino and City officials will hand out advocacy cards for people to sign and send to U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis in support of Boston’s grant application for the Blue in Green (BiG) initiative. BiG creates avenues for Bosoton’s Blue Hill residents to rise from poverty and into green jobs. The highly competitive grant, part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Pathways Out of Poverty Grant, calls for proposals which will provide green job placements for target communities of approximately 100,000 people who traditionally face barriers to training and employment opportunities.
2:00 PM Lyndon Schoolyard & Open Classroom Ribbon Cutting
Lyndon K-8 Pilot School, 20 Mt. Vernon St., West Roxbury
Mayor Menino will speak briefly at the Lyndon School, which received a grant from the Boston Schoolyard Initiative (BSI). The BSI is a public-private partnership between the City and private funders and has refurbished 75 schoolyards since 1995. The Lyndon Schoolyard and Open Classroom includes new art playspace with colorful equipment for elementary students and neighborhood children, running areas and a basketball hoop for older children and an outdoor classroom complete with a miniature green roof on the storage shed, an urban meadow, sample woodland, and planting beds.
