The City Council's budget-vetting committee is scheduled to take testimony on the Boston Public Library system's budget on June 3.

The Ways and Means Committee hearing is set for 6 p.m. in the Iannella Chamber in City Hall.

Boston Public Library trustees voted earlier this month to close four libraries, including the Lower Mills branch. Neighborhood activists have rallied to prevent the closures, and House lawmakers are weighing amendments this week to the House's version of the state budget that would attempt to stop the closures.

The Ways and Means hearing is one of 31 meetings over two months. The 13-member City Council is weighing Mayor Thomas Menino's $2.5 billion budget for fiscal year 2011.

The part of the fiscal 2011 budget of the Boston Centers for Youth and Families, which has proposed pulling out of eight community centers and having nonprofit organizations fill in, will have a hearing on June 21. Two from Dorchester and Mattapan are on the chopping block: The Marshall community center and the Mattahunt community center.

Menino administration officials kick off the hearings on Friday at 10 a.m. with an overview of the budget.

Many of the hearings, which are open to the public, focus on various aspects of the Boston Public Schools system, including general overview (May 3) and its capital budget and facilities (May 10).

Other topics include the Boston Redevelopment Authority (May 17), the source of some controversy during last year's municipal elections, the Boston Fire Department (June 18), and the Boston Police Department (June 14).
